Are Ducks in Season? Yes…Yes they are.

Tonight the Red Wings are getting their shotguns ready for a good ole’ duck shoot as they take on the Anaheim Ducks.  This will be the third meeting between the two teams this season, and hunting has been good.  Earlier this year the Wings blanked the Ducks 5-0 at the Joe and then won a 4-2 match that was half way played in the dark I think…  Brad Stuart even got two goals in that game.  Click below for more on how to down a duck.

The Red Wings look to extend their home winning streak to 19 games tonight against the Anaheim Ducks.  The Ducks won in overtime against Carolina Wednesday night after a missed call, which resulted in a Corey Perry game winning goal.  The Ducks have been hot this past 15 games recording an on fire 11-2-2 record.  The Wings have been amazing at home this year.  Let’s hope they get number 19 tonight for Holmstrom’s 1000th game, and to keep the lead in the West.  If the way we play at home and away in the regular season is any preview of what we will see in the playoffs, then we need home-ice by all means!

After last night, the Canucks are only one point behind, and with one less game played.  The Central is getting tight again.  The Blues snuck one in last night against the Devils and are only behind 3 points and have played two less games.  We still have some cushion against the Preds as they’ve played the same amount of games and are behind 5 points.  Please get this done guys.

The Wings will be without Dan Cleary for at least a few days after having fluid drained and a cortisone shot after the game against Edmonton on Wednesday (Via Detroit Free Press).  Jan Mursak is slated to be in the lineup tonight as his replacement.  Jimmy Howard is still out with a broken finger, and may start facing shots tomorrow.  Mike Commodore will not play tonight as Jakub Kindl gets the nod from Babs to play.

Tomas Holmstrom is playing in his 1000th game tonight, a huge milestone for any player.  It would be great to see him net one of his classic redirects while screening the goalie with his huge butt.  Go get ’em Tommy!

In some head to head notes:

When the Wings score first, they have a .758 winning percentage.

When up after the 1st Period, they have a .875 winning percentage.

The Ducks have a winning percentage of .111 when trailing after one, and .000 when trailing after two.

Needless to say, it is crucial to score first and hang on to a lead against this Ducks team.  Of course, I can assume that they will be scrappy and will be more than willing to end this home winning streak the Red Wings have enjoyed this season. Our special teams need to keep staying hot as well.  They have scored a PP goal in the last two games but gave up one short-handed goal against Phoenix.  They PK gave up one against Phoenix, but stopped 6 or 7 Power Plays against the Oilers, the 2nd best power play in the league.  Detroit has not allowed a goal in a 5 on 3 situation all season, unbelievable.  Hear that San Jose?

Keep scoring please. Via-Toledo Blade

Zetterberg, Lidstrom, Franzen, and Stuart each have two goals against the Ducks this season.  That sneaky Fin, Selanne, and Koivu are the only Ducks to score against the Wings this season.  Cam Fowler is a horrendous -6 against the Wings and Perry, Getzlaf, and Beauchemin don’t fare much better with a -5 each.  Sounds like we need to pressure these guys tonight and bring the heat.

I’m really looking forward to this game, not because I hate the Ducks, but because I want that #19 and I want a “W” for Holmstrom tonight.  Catch it on NHL Network and FS-D at 6:30 Central.  Also, Winging It In Motown has a great game time open thread.

And we all remember this…
